According to Laila, the unequal expectation that young black men can date whomever they like while simultaneously policing young black women when they do not adhere to strict rules about sticking with ‘one’s own’ led to conflict among girls rather than between boys and girls. She suggests that young black women fought with young women of different backgrounds over access to young men, when the real cause of tension was the attitudes and practices of ‘the boys, their relatives and stuff’ who ‘talk shit’ when girls dated outside their own circles. These stories demonstrate how intercultural dating has indeed become common, and show how it operates as a flashpoint in the negotiation of more fluid notions of cultural identifications. Mix and conflict thus cut across one another in this example.

Conflict over intercultural dating clearly indicates that it is not universally accepted, but more than this, that it operates as a means for articulating and working through simultaneous expressions of gender, culture and sexuality. As suggested in Chapter 3, the extent of intimate mix among this generation has become a locus for concern on the part of some relatives and parents, particularly in relation to their control over young women. Young people’s own gender practices and heterosexual performances interlace with more conventional and anxious notions of ethnic identity in ways that can result in conflict that appears on the surface to be solely racial. Acknowledging the true causes of such conflict, and management thereof, require greater critical insight into the intersectional nature of young people’s identities as well as the appeal of strategic essentialism to some when threatened by the sexual autonomy of young women.
